Your public IP is shared with every website, app and email server you connect to. On its own it reveals your ISP, ASN and approximate location โ and it can be used to rate-limit, block, or profile you.
What it can and cannot do
- Can โ estimate your city/region, identify your ISP, flag whether you are on a VPN, proxy, hosting provider or Tor exit.
- Cannot โ pinpoint your home address or identify you by name without your ISP's records.
Ways to mask your IP
- VPN โ routes traffic through a server that shows its IP instead of yours; the best all-round option.
- Proxy โ hides your IP for a single app or browser, usually without VPN-grade encryption.
- Tor โ strong anonymity for browsing, at the cost of speed.
Verify what you are exposing
After connecting to a VPN or proxy, confirm it is working with our IP checker โ it shows your visible IP, ISP, location estimate and whether the address is flagged as a VPN, proxy or hosting IP.
